FAQ

Questions about headers in general and some models in specific.....

Q: Why do all the CT headers pix look the same?
A: the official word from CT:
The 91-99 are the same header just with the addition of adapters for the 91-94 model. The 00-05 is the same front bank but an entirely different rear bank, however it looks "the same" to the casual glance.

Q: Why do all the new DC Sports headers pix look the same?
A: The 91-2005 are the same header just with the additional adapters for the 91-94 model.

Q: Why are the B&B headers not CARB approved??
A: The collector design is not an approveable design. Slip joints leak and exhaust leaks, however slight, are not what the CARB wants to see. That said, they are still the best sets for FI cars.....you will figure it out if you think about it.

Q: What about the other Non approved headers like the Cantrell, Taitec, Fujitsubo, etc?
A: They may not have spent the $ to get their product approved, it helps increase the profit margin if you don't bother.

Q: Do headers make my car louder?
A: Comon - get real - like you could hear yourself think over the straight pipe NSX Prime Special exhaust you installed? There is no noticeable db increase with headers, of course there is with aftermarket "free-flo" exhausts as the exhaust gas path is more open and they weigh less = less packing = more net VOLUME. If you install them both at the same time you might think the headers make the car louder. They do absorb/transmit the exhaust noise in a different way than the OEM manifolds do so the timbre might change, it is not louder though.

Q: Where are the headers you offer made?
A: The DC Sports headers are made "over there in a rice paddy" - the B&B and Comptech are made here in the USA.

Q: How does that affect them being in stock?
A: The DC Sports headers are made in batches, so we will get in 10 sets and then they will go back to making headers that they make $ on. The B&B are made to order, so if I do not have a set under the mattress they will take 2-3 weeks to get. The CT are made in small production runs and are normally available except when they are not. Then it might be 2-4 weeks. We try and keep 1 set for all year ranges in stock all the time.

Q: What about the welding?
A: All of them have great welds.

Q: Will I really get +45HP with any of these?
A: Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh no. Typical real life RWHP net gains with headers AND free flow exhaust installs are in the + 20-24 range when installed TOGETHER. Do not believe manufacturers HP claims. Those are typically inflated by dyno smoothing and correction factors and/or testing in the winter. You will see the greatest gains on a 3.0L motor.

Q: Are there any performance differences between header designs?
A: All the headers that bolt up to the stock exhausts will do about the same net HP increase. Exactly equal length tubes and this or that shaped collectors make a SLIGHT difference in the output and at what rpm the most gain is shown. Since all of the commercially available designs use the SAME tubing diameter (1.75") most will show the same increase +/- the variation in the dyno.. That is not to say that if you have a custom set that is routed differently and uses a different tubing/collector size than stock you could not make a few more HP especially on an FI or stroker motor. If you have ever seen a set of RTR race headers you will know what I mean. We have installed a set of the:
Comptech
DC Sports
RM/B&B
Taitec
headers and not noticed any appreciable difference between them on an NA car.

Q: Are there any performance differences between 304SS and Iconel or Titanium headers?
A: All the headers that bolt up to the stock exhausts will do about the same net HP increase regardless of the cost of the material they are made from. All else being equal, the material the tubes are made from does not affect anything except the size of the dent in your wallet. Iconel and Titanium may last longer than SS and do weigh less since thinner material can be used. However, most of the increased cost of the fancy metal headers is in the marketing hype - look up the price of the tubes of Iconel vs 304 and you will note that it is not $300 vs $3000.00.

Q: What about the really cheap ones on eBay??
A: They are DC Sports copies, if you look at them carefully (we have a set taken off a wreck) the flanges are not machined - they look like flame cuts from plate steel, and the welds are... well, lets just say they are not as good as the other 4 brands listed above. Maybe the local HS Shop class in Taipei makes them. They are not smog legal anywhere and they are really heavy except for the OBX version. Their warranty is the best in the business though so that is a plus. Your call.

Carbon fibre engine lids are not guaranteed to get the driver on the pole, but they look pretty. 4 layer prepreg carbon fiber, autoclaved and then sprayed with extra epoxy and polished to death for that show look. Type-R Style, shipped with or without mesh. Nice and Racy, it's you. Almost lighter than air. Then there is the full coverage look that everyone with a stock and unadorned NSX motor covets, the full coverage CF engine cover lid. Acres of CF at a modest price. Note:actual reductions in lap time may vary, and may be below measurable limits. Even if you do not exceed the speed limit, at least you will look cool doing it. All billet hardware mounting brackets and SS bolts included. You must reuse your OEM engine cover lid rubber gasket or buy a new one.
