Day One – He who has the Most Decals Wins

Pahrump, Spring Mountain Raceway: Weather clear, temps starting at 81 and warming to 91 by noon (tip: 91 degrees is unkind to turbos and port-o-potties so get your business done in the morning or get an intercooler). The NSX master tuners Mark and Nick prepped the car for a hot day, day one of this seven-day event. Read as, “we were pushing mucho hp at the dyno yesterday but there’s no way they’d put on the track with that so early in the game”. Several supporters showed up from San Diego and Phoenix, great fun to visit with the gang. It was a little bit unnerving to see the wide selection of hardware that showed up, definitely not your local club event! J

We were grouped with the Unlimited 1, Unlimited 2 and Unlimited AMG cars for our run sessions. The first session included a warm up lap with a camera car leading, we’ll have a nice official event DVD later. Somehow all the planned gamesmanship went out the window and Greg couldn’t hold back and passed, everybody including the F40, waking everyone up! Hey, who are those guys? Unfortunately, the onboard video was still in the pits so there’s no glory tape this day. Also of note, the first spin of the day belonged to Rupert, that’s right the track designer and owner.

With the car running strong Mark took the second session, and after a lap to warm up the Yokohama slicks he clocked a 1:50, 1:49 and 1:49 putting us at least temporarily on top of the leader board in the Unlimited class. Yes, there was a faster car in the Touring class, Paul Mumpford in a heavily modified Viper clicked off a couple of seconds to turn in a 1:47 and 1:48. But the unlimited boys were now dropping by the pits to see just what we had going on and there were two more sessions to go on the day. At lunch we had a chance to review the official time sheets to confirm our estimates, yep one more sub 1:50 run was needed to solidify our position. Plan was to have Mark warm up the tires, clock one or two hotties, and go home. Which he did! But before he could come in another large spin put enough rocks on the track that we decided to pack it in and head for Willow. Who spun? Earning his second pink bunny of the day, it was Rupert! Actually it wasn’t a spin as much as a “different line”. (right! I need to remember to use that one next time!)

Other notable events included; the M-coupe 100 yds of course with the unfortunate result of moving his front wheels backwards about a foot, went home on a flatbed. Wayne started cooking (his motor it turns out) in an effort to catch us; his lap times were dropping until he overheated. Doug Hayashi, the other NSX in the group, came out in session three looking for some fresh meat, cutting some fast ones before to rocks fell, so race fans we’ll have to wait to see the official results to see if they got us at the end. All in all, a very good first day, and as you can see from the last picture a class act!
