Race Report

Back to the index.

Left San Diego at 7:00 am with a full tank of $2.49 a gallon hi-octane and a venti Carmel machiattia. We towed the NSX and enough spare parts to rebuild an New York cab to Baker by 11. There we unloaded car 15 at the Quickie Mart where we gassed up, now at $2.11. This allowed us to drive the final 60 miles as our first test of all the mods we made over the past 8 hectic weeks. First the new rotors needed bedding, building heat gradually. Oil pressure steady with the AccuSump activated, although the real test will be the high speed sweepers at the track. With the coil-over shocks run up ten turns the front splitter seemed to clear all encountered obstacles. We will have to remember to turn it down each down at the track and back up when we leave.

We arrived at the track about 1PM after a quick lunch. About one half of the competition has already set up base camp, including three other NSXs, all red. Doug looks to have the FlameMobile running well, I only saw them crawl under it twice the whole afternoon! Some final suspension adjustments I suspect. Doug has also entered his S2000 in the touring 3 class. As his latest DCB trick, Doug adds Jason's active wing for his hot laps, visit the Pulp Racing site for those details. We ran a few hot laps to heat cycle two new sets of race tires, one full tread and one shaved to 4/32's. The latter will be reserved for our daily assault on the hot laps, something we'll do once we figure we've sorted out the new track. We are in the touring division that requires tires with a UTQC rating of 140 or greater; we are trying BFGoodrich 245/40YR-17 g-Force T/A KD and 285/30YR-18 g-Force T/A KD, I now think we should have gone to the 295/35s. With the modified splitter and wider front rubber we stick like glue however notice the rear steps out unexpectedly in the tight twistie stuff. A check of the hot temps shows we're at 40 psi, should have bleed them with nitrogen but we ran out off time. Something we just ran out of here, the track goes cold at 4:20. We spend another hour organizing the trailer, ie, where did I put the NSX key and adding the event required decals ( I spent most of last weekend removing last year's remains! )

Then off to check in, consume some red meat and get some rest.... we're gonna need it.

Sorry, no pictures, I forgot my card reader at home so that will have to wait...............
