Pahrump - Gateway to the New Old West - what's with that?
We started the day at 8:15am with a driver's meeting, not early unless your hotel neighbors kept you up until 3AM with their loud partying. It looks like we have about 53 competitors in this year's OTC, down from last year. We have 4 NSX's entered in three classes; Doug Hiashi in Unlimited 1 (super-charged, slicks and trailering), Mark / Trevor Allen and Andrie Hartanto / Tom Chirella in Unlimited 2 (normally aspirated, slicks and trailering) and us in Touring 2 (normally aspirated, street tires and driven between tracks). There is a strong contingent of Honda S2000s; one with a very big, active rear wing; Doug is running his s2k in touring 3 and "borrows" this wing for his runs. It is interesting to see them change it between run groups; seems to work, wonder why Formula 1 banned these in the 60's? Each run group gets four sessions a day; Todd and I switch off every other run as do most two driver cars. Strategy is important as the track conditions and traffic are different in each session. Today it appeared sessions 2 & 4, mid morning and late afternoon had the stickiest pavement to work with. After session two DH comes in with a Desert Dusted s2k. Turns out that a Miata blew an engine right in front of him dumping all its oil on the track in front of Doug, zip, off the track. In the Flame mobile he works down to a 1:42. The two Unlimited two cars are duking it out in the 1:48 range, the Allan's come out on top (fastest single lap) with a flyer in the 4th session surprising Andrie. I had bet him before the event we'd beat him for fast lap if he spotted us 3 seconds. Seemed like a stretch at the time but we carded a 1:51.2, good enough by 0.6 seconds. We are still tweaking the car but ended up the day 0.6 seconds behind our class leader, the Porsche. he easily pulls 5 car lengths on the straights, being down a few HP with the low compression engine is a drag but on a course with a few more curves we should get them; we end the first day second in class.
